Chiang Rai- Part 2
After we became crack mahouts, we headed to Myanmar, crossing the bridge on foot, to avoid the long traffic jams both directions. This required going through emigration and immigration...going and coming. Once in Myanmar, we jumped into a tuk tuk...named after the sound the engine makes. Our primary stop in Myanmar was the Shwedagon Pagoda, which has a circular outdoor area with separate stops for each day of the week...you look up your birthday in a book, and it tells you which day of the week that was, and what your animal is. (Mine was a rat, Rita's a tiger.) then you find your day, followed by a person holding a parasol to shield the hot sun. (Generally these were youngsters, but mine was older.) The parasol holder also instructed what to do at your station, for good luck, and then escorted you back to your shoes...which were removed previously. Then...appearing miraculously were the wares that they had to sell...some of which were nice original artwork on small cards. We got a few!
