Sunday Afternoon, November 9 - Part 2

Next stop: The War Remnants Museum. This museum basically exists to bash our involvement in the Vietnam War, particularly as to atrocities against non-combatants, the effects of agent orange, unexploded ordnance, etc. While obviously biased in presentation, and omitting similar acts that might have been committed by North Vietnamese troops, there is no doubt that we did a lot of things during the Vietnam War that we shouldn't have, in the name of stopping Communism.

I think the highlight was a large room titled "Requiem," which honored photographers who were killed in the War. And we were surprised to see that organization and funding came from Kentucky, as a gift to the Vietnamese people.

As to stopping Communism, we understand that Vietnam was repressive immediately following reunification, similar to North Korea today, but that the fall of the Soviet Union led to significant reforms. Today there is private ownership of business and property, and other vestiges of a capitalistic economy. There is only one political party, but otherwise things look pretty capitalistic here!
